Deux-Montagnes, October 20th , 2022 – The City of Deux-Montagnes is pleased to have welcomed, on October 18, a delegation from France to draw from the lessons learned and the innovative solutions retained by the City regarding flood risk management.
For the occasion, Denis Martin, Mayor of Deux-Montagnes, and Benoit Ferland, General Manager of the City, began by reviewing the flood of 2017. More specifically, they discussed the major findings after the crisis and the subsequent actions taken to protect the population of Deux-Montagnes by permanently preventing water from coming into the territory. The City retained the following solutions: temporary dyke, permanent dyke, rainwater harvesting structures, etc. A productive meeting, followed by a field visit, which highlighted the factors of success and addressed the management of the obstacles encountered (government authorizations, engineering challenges, etc.).
“It has been an honour to share our achievements and the lessons learned with these overseas stakeholders who are confronting similar, yet diverse challenges. Mobilizing partners around this common challenge and sharing innovative tools contribute to improving flood risk management, taking into account the specific characteristics of each environment,” said Denis Martin, Mayor of Deux-Montagnes.
This exchange of experience with some 15 multi-sectoral actors took place as part of a study visit on flood risk management, overseen by the European Centre for Flood Risk Prevention (CEPRI) and the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
