Deux-Montagnes Marks 30th Anniversary of École Polytechnique Massacre by Naming Park in Memory of Maud Haviernick

Deux-Montagnes, December 4, 2019 – Yesterday, a short commemorative ceremony was held to mark the 30th anniversary of the massacre at the École polytechnique de Montréal, a tragedy that claimed the life of Maud Haviernick, the beloved daughter of a Deux-Montagnes resident. For the occasion, the City of Deux-Montagnes paid tribute to Maud Haviernick and her family by naming a park in her memory.

Maud held a degree in environmental design from theUniversité du Québec à Montréal. She was completing her studies in metallurgical engineering at École Polytechnique and on her way of making her dream of becoming an engineer a reality. She was posthumously admitted to the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec in April 1990. Maud was looking forward to a future filled with possibilities. Through this commemoration, she will remain a source of inspiration for us all.

December 6, 1989 is a dark day in our history. Through this commemoration, the city is underscoring the value it places on respect and condemning all forms of violence against women. I commend the courage of the Haviernick family and the message of hope they have for the future, a message that I deeply share with them,” said Mayor Denis Martin of Deux-Montagnes.

Moved by the city’s initiative, members of the Haviernick family are delighted to have such a thoughtful reminder of Maud they can share with their nearby community. “Whenever I go to Deux-Montagnes, I will always pay a visit to my late aunt’s park,” said a young niece who never had the chance to know Maud in person. Words that testify to what Maud’s legacy means to her nieces and nephews.

Located at the end of 26e Avenue, Parc Maud Haviernick will be inaugurated in spring 2020. The tranquil setting on the shores of Lac des Deux-Montagnes will provide a quiet place for reflection and for paying tribute to all the victims of the 1989 tragedy.
