CHEMINEY SWEEPING

Please note that from now on, the Intermunicipal Fire Safety Service will no longer provide recommendations and will not issue accreditation for chimney sweeps in the territory Deux-Montagnes.

However, all  contractors offering chimney sweeping on the territory of the City, must be obtained from the Urban Planning Department, a permit of solicitation’s services.

The City of Deux-Montagnes would warn citizens who are approached by some contractors of sweeping, to remain vigilant about the qualifications and costs related to the services provided by some independent contractor of sweeping.

WHAT IS SWEEPING ?

Sweeping is a  cleaning operation and inspection of chimneys usually offered also by installers combustion appliances and fireplace. Sweeping removes any accumulated creosote within the chimney walls. Sweeping also ensures that they are kept clear and free of bird nests, wasps or dead animals. It is recommended to regularly inspect, good condition chimneys and connecting pipes.

Any owner, tenant or occupant of a building with a fireplace must ensure that cleaning the fireplace or have it cleaned by a qualified chimney sweep company and at least once a year.

The recommended period of sweeping will take place annually from April 1st to September 30.

As the owner of fireplace, you are obliged to have your chimney inspected each time you install a new device or home fuel or modify this product and regardless of the fuel used (gas, oil, wood, etc). Owners equipped with solid fuel (wood, wood pellets, anthracite) are required also to maintain by themselves, at all times and in good condition their chimney or fuel-fired appliance or connecting lines. The owner must also forbear to burning any material other than solid fuel mentioned above.

CHOOSE YOUR CHIMNEY SWEEP

Only members of the Association of Professionals Heating (APC) sweeps hold the required licenses RBQ allowing them to make a full sweeping with safety rules and also perform repairs on the chimney if necessary (see the license 4.2)

SAFETY TIPS :

• For certificate sweeping, visual inspection or certificate of compliance report, it is recommended that you hire a member of the Association of Professional heating.

• We should burn dry wood and good quality only.

• The base of the chimney should be emptied regularly.

• Hot ashes should be placed in a metal container with a tight lid and raised floor, stored outside and away from combustible materials.

• We should wait a minimum of 48 hours before disposing of ashes even if you think they are completely out and extinguished.

• The exterior of the chimney should be checked regularly in order to detect any deterioration of the brick or mortar joints or even damage the crown of the chimney.

• You should never reuse an old condemned chimney to pass the exhaust ducts such a vent range hoods or clothes dryers.

• When cleaning the chimney walls, avoid using logs or powder additives designed to clean the flues. These products can only eliminate 60 % of creosote, while chimney sweeps generally remove 75 to 90%.

• If you want to sweep your chimney yourself, we suggest you obtain the proper brush diameter and length and adapted to the model of your fireplace. Ensure that you follow the safety instructions and follow the rules of use of cleaning products recommended, otherwise, call a professional.
