On Saturday, April 1, 2017, at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall, a Canadian citizenship ceremony was held with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada/Government of Canada (IRCC), in the presence of His Honour the Honourable J. Michel Doyon, c.r., Ad.E., Ph.D., Lieutenant Governor of Quebec, Mayor Denis Martin of Deux-Montagnes, and dignitaries of the Deux-Montagnes RCM.
The memorable event was organized jointly by City of Deux-Montagnes and the Deux-Montagnes Canada Day Committee on the occasion of Canada’s 150th anniversary. Over 210 people attended the swearing in ceremony of 30 Canadian citizens by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
In addition to the official ceremony, guests had an opportunity to enjoy performances by artists in the region, including singers, Irish dancing, Ukrainian dancing, folklore, First Nations dancing, musical ensembles, and bagpipers. This initiative was made possible by the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th, a cooperative effort between the Fondation Laurentides, the Government of Canada, and extraordinary leaders from coast to coast to coast.
Speaking to the new citizens, the Honourable Lieutenant Governor Doyon said: “I hope you will find in this beautiful country a haven of peace and love, values which may perhaps have disappeared from the lands of your ancestors, before coming to settle in our homeland, which is now your homeland too.”
“It was a real pleasure to take part in this beautiful citizenship ceremony here in Deux-Montagnes,” said Linda Lapointe, MP (Rivière-des-Milles-Îles). “Becoming a Canadian citizen is a milestone in anyone’s life, and I feel very fortunate to have been here with them, especially during our country’s 150th anniversary year.”
“I feel privileged that I was able to attend this very significant, once-in-a-lifetime event for our new fellow citizens,” said Benoit Charette, MNA (Deux-Montagnes). “I’m pleased that they’ve chosen Quebec, and our region in particular, as their place to settle and carry on with their lives. Our openness and enviable quality of life will make all the difference for successful integration into their new country.”
“I’m sure all citizens present will never forget today’s ceremony and the huge sense of pride they must feel,” said Mayor Denis Martin. “I’d like to thank Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada and the Government of Canada for having agreed to hold this ceremony in the City of Deux-Montagnes.”
The City of Deux-Montagnes and the Deux-Montagnes Canada Day Committee extend their sincere thanks to the new citizens accepted by Canada, to all those present as guests for the ceremony, and of course, to the artists whose performances made the day a special occasion in itself.
The Canadian citizenship ceremony on April 1, 2017 in Deux-Montagnes was a truly unforgettable event.
