A Happy Ending for the Public Library

At 103 years old, Annette Savoie, the library’s very first director, is as sharp as ever. For several years and often in the face of adversity, she and her volunteers struggled to establish a public library in Deux-Montagnes. In 1986, she published a book on the history of the Deux-Montagnes public library in which she discusses her fight for the library to be managed by a documentation professional.

Many years have passed since then. That said, Ms. Savoie has recently decided to update her work by adding a happier ending, one that describes the evolution of this cultural hub since its beginning. The book will soon be available at the library.

“I rejoice when I think of how much our little resource center has grown,” said Ms. Savoie, “providing digital books for the enjoyment of readers. Much like the mouche du coche from our beloved writer of fables, I am proud to have laid the first stone.

She ends by extending an invitation to the population of Deux-Montagnes: “Make use of our beautiful library, where you can read newspapers and periodicals while enjoying a cup of coffee and admiring our beautiful lake.”
