Deux-Montagnes, May 10, 2021 – The City of Deux-Montagnes’s commitment to its residents to make the fight against climate change a priority by agreeing to adhere to the United for the Climate Declaration initiated by the Union of Quebec Municipalities (UMQ) was officially adopted as a resolution during the May 6 municipal council meeting.
The United for the Climate Declaration highlights the leading role municipalities play in fighting against and adapting to climate change. By signing the declaration, municipalities are making a clear commitment to their residents that they will adhere to it in every possible way in everything they do.
“No one can any longer deny that the climate crisis is real. As a responsible municipality, we must decide now to reduce the ecological footprint in our jurisdiction at every possible level, including infrastructure, urban planning initiatives, and public transportation,” said Deux-Montagnes Mayor Denis Martin. Our decision to adhere to the United for the Climate Declaration is a sign of our willingness to act in an exemplary manner in everything we do in order to generate positive mitigation measures on the climate today for the benefit of the generations of tomorrow.
Concrete examples of your city’s commitment to fighting climate change include:
- Adopting a sustainable tree policy (with more restrictions on removals)
- Planting hundreds of trees
- Retrofitting municipal buildings to make them more energy efficient
- Changing the arena’s refrigeration system to a more environmentally friendly one
- Continuing to replace municipal vehicles with electric models
- Acquiring properties to create new green spaces
- Upgrading infrastructure to eliminate flooding
- Installing wood playground modules
- Etc.
The United for the Climate Declaration
The United for the Climate Declaration adopted by the UMQ emphasizes how the global environmental upheaval caused by climate change must be dealt with first and foremost at the local level with concrete measures put forward by municipal decision-makers to adapt their environments, infrastructures, and services to meet the needs of their residents and their lifestyles. The declaration also makes it clear that the fight against climate change requires both political commitment and community action. Because we are all part of the problem, we (governments and residents) must all be part of the solution as well.
